My husband is Israeli. Some of his fondest memories are of going to Geula on the city bus, alone, at age 5, with a grocery list. His mom would write his address on his arm with a sharpie marker, just in case. One family in their neighborhood had a 'lost kids' gamach. If you found a kid outside who was either too young to talk or who couldn't figure out how to get back home you took them to the lost kids gamach. If you came outside to call your kid in for dinner and couldn't find them, you went to the gamach and chances were they'd been deposited there by other adults or older kids. I doubt things still operate this way, but it is such a different culture.
