I was calling some psychiatrists about evaluating ds for adhd.
Some said they do 1 hour evaluation with parents & child in 1 session. (Up to 1.5 hours)
Others do 3 separate hour long sessions -1 hour just child, 1 hour parents & 1 hour planning session.
Obviously the latter option is 3x the cost.
Is there a huge difference in doing the 3 hr vs the 1 hour testing?

Probably. Higher chance you'll have a more accurate diagnosis. Even if it's ADHD and you decide on medication, it doesn't mean now everything is perfect. You still need strategies to cope.

Psychiatrists don't do 'testing'. They will however do structured clinical interview for diagnosis (and maybe some rating scales). And yes, you want the person to separately speak to your child, without you, so they can get the full picture. And of course you want sufficient time to discuss the treatment plan.
So I guess to me it's not even a question. You get what you pay for.

You definitely get what you pay for. When we needed clear direction we went private, it cost a pretty penny but included 5-6 2 hrs testing sessions in addition to an intake session, school observation and feedback session with both parents and meeting with the school. And a lengthy report. As it was very thorough we got much more information than when we just used the developmental pediatrician covered by insurance. Gave is a much clearer picture of what is going on.
