As the aunt and uncle of the bar mitzvah boy, is cash expected, or is a sefer good enough?
Yeshivish circles. We’re a bit tight for money right now.
Thanks!

Don’t worry about expectations. Do what you can afford. Keep in mind you may have to give gifts to other nephews reaching bar mitzvah age so don’t overextend yourself. It would be worse to be generous to one and not to the others.

Sefer is fine, if you can chip in with a few aunts and get a set so you get more for your money, but either one is fine.
In Yeshivish circles the kids count their seforim just the same, (or more)

I would try to by something more unique, but with in your budget
like a name stamp to stamp inside his books or an mp3 (if allowed).
