And should I boil the water first or boil it up together with the sausages?
I cook them for only around 20 minutes and always seem a bit waterlogged.

Don’t boil. I’d sauté, broil or grill.

Do you mean hot dogs? I boil them all the time. 5-10 mins is plenty. Score them just a bit. Boil the water and put them in once boiled. When the cut opens up, its time to take them out. Doesn't take long at all.

You can boil hot dogs. Sausages are best cooked in oven or in grill pan or frying pan.

Hot dogs need only 5 minutes of boiling time. Add the hot dogs once water is boiling.
But I prefer them browned in a pan.
