Use a sheitel pin to separate the knots, and if you need help locating the right spot, because the knots are very tight, use a magnifying glass.

I just pick at it without pulling on it and creating more tension.
Sometimes I use a crochet hook.
In extreme cases, just cut the lace and buy a new one (they're pretty cheap).
