I have an item that I’m interested in selling on amazon.
It costs me $10
I’m curious about how much I would have to sell it for to make money on it.
(As in how much markup makes sense)

Depends on what it is. And how new it is

How much does it weigh? Will it be fba? What category as the fees vary?

you can figure out your total costs and profit on the Amazon fba fees calculator.

I do bookkeeping for a company that sells on amazon, mostly fba, and overall, I see Amazon total expenses are about 35-38% of sales.

So that would bring the cost to 13.50 about.
Then how much markup would I need to make it worth it? I see similar items being sold for 15-25 on amazon, can I be in that range?
I really appreciate your responses
Trying to see if it makes sense, really want to help our family income

There's two parts to Amazons fees. There's the percentage Amazon takes which is usually 15-20% of sale price. Then there's the shipping fees. If you're having Amazon ship the items, you also need to pay to ship the item to Amazon warehouse first...

There's also advertising costs to get your product seen...

And you need to factor in returns. You lose the shipping when there's a return...

You should sell it for as much as you can. Check what the competition is selling it for.

Is there a reason why you're confident that people will buy your item instead of the existing established listings for similar items? If you're not sure how much to sell it for, there's likely a lot more research necessary to ensure it's a viable business idea before purchasing it and going to market.

I heard that one of the popular carriage buntings selling for $150-180 in local stores, is mfg in China & imported by heimishe people & cost $20 to make there.

This varies by products. I oversee about 65k different items and some products have higher, some have lower.

Are you going to do fba? Clothing/blankets should be about 15% referral fee, factor in shipping.

As this is your own product, you will need to advertise or it won't get sales, you need to factor in a fee for that. You would have to see going rates, but I imagine at least 3%

Keep in mind that clothing could be a restricted category. You might want to put it under baby or home....

Really thank you, I’m totally in the beginning stages of research, nowhere near purchasing yet but this helps me decide if I should even put my effort into researching

You have to get permission from Amazon to sell items in those categories.
