I do some freelance editing and proofreading work, primarily for graduate students in college. I'm good at what I do, but I don't have credentials (unless you count working as a junior editor of the science journal while I was an undergrad student).

How would you decide on a price point? I think I'm selling myself short for the work I do, but I want to be fair to people. Without credentials, it's very hard to know.

Charge the higher price and reduce it if people aren't willing to pay it. You can't do the other way around. Don't feel guilty for charging too much, as many women do; if people are willing to pay the price, that means it's fair.

But I don't know what price point to start at.

I do want the extra bit of parnasa, so I don't want to quote a price and have someone balk at it. I have no clue what to charge. Right now, I've been charging either $35/hour or $35/page if it's a few pages. With the amount of effort I put in, that seems too low.

An experienced content editor can charge more, as much as $50 to $85 an hour (or even more, depending on what you're doing.

Hold on one second - someone now told me that this is unethical.

Is it true? Editing a paper for college students for pay is unethical? It didn't occur to me that it would be, and I'm usually careful with these things...
