They both vary greatly. Sometimes rentals are $650 and custom gowns are $1000 and sometimes they are both cheaper or both much more expensive.

Depends on store and gown. I rented 5 years ago in Brooklyn for about 1400. Everything was included, and they altered the dress not just to size but also made some changes based on my preferences. I was very happy with the outcome. I think having that gown made would've cost way more and I didn't need to worry about cleaning it or storing it.
