I have an infection and I need to put the ointment on my skin. Can I spread it on Shabbos or just dab it?

Not a simple answer. It might be a solution to put the ointment on a sterile gauze pad today (Friday), put it away in a clean sealed bag, put the gauze pad on the wound on Shabbos as needed. Really best you ask a rabbi.
