My husband and I are considering moving from Monsey. We would like a small, out of town type community where we can really contribute and make a difference - even start a shul (my husband can daven, lein, give shiurim, etc.). We both have elderly parents here in Monsey so we also need something that is casual driving distance - not over an hour. We don't need tons of kosher dining options - one kosher supermarket is fine. I would like somewhere near a good boys' school. Does anyone have any ideas?

Scranton, PA may fit your bill.
It's about 2 hours from Monsey.
Very affordable, very nice, down-to-earth community, friendly, accessible and has an excellent boys' yeshiva.
NOt sure how much need there is for a new shul though.
I've heard talks about chassidish people buying up tracts of land in the Poconos and building a new community. I don't know if it's just talk or if concrete steps have been taken. It's certainly affordable and not too far from NY.

Contact the beth shalom synagogue
They are starting a new school
They already have the Scranton hebrew day school a bais yaackov
Another small girls high school
A big high school yeshivah
A shul called machzeiki hadass and ohev tzedek theyeshivah has a kosher supermarket and you kind find other kosher food

Scranton is extremely nice. If you plan to commute daily it would probably depend on which part of NY
