Twins should have names that are individual, but the names should also sound good together and not clash.

Are Yidis and Hudis names on their own? I thought they were both nicknames for Yehudis.

Yidis is Yehudis.
Hudis is Hadas (like Hadassah without the hei)
A Yiddish speaker would not confuse the two names or even think they are similar.

You can call them both flower meanings. Dahlia and Lily. I don't know what circles you're from but it could work...

My big kids call the baby Pesty or Pester. But they don't know what the word "pest" means.

I know a family with a yitschok and an issac. 2 different names. Dont know how.
Personally I would do shira and simcha
Or 2 other names that go nicely together but are easily said as separate names and not confusing.

I would do 2 names I LOVE (and go nicely together;) either beginning with same letter
or have the same vowel
(or even the same ending but middle initial not the same like my last one on list)
or just two I love.... but never would rhyme! I would do:
shira and adina
ayala and avigail
reena and rachelle
rikki and gitty
yael and elisheva
perri and miri

Never heard of Hudis being from Hadas but Hudis is absolutely from Yehudis. Perhaps in the non Yiddish speaking world.

Our twins are Tali & Tova- not rhyming but I liked the way they sound together.
Edited to say that they aren't identical

I know a sandy/sally
I briefly toyed with the idea of Eitan/Natan if I had twin boys but I don't so, for now, it's a non issue

The way your standard chassidish individual would pronounce the name Hadas is Hudes: Kametz Hei (Hu) Des. It is a normal name around here. We wouldn't associate it with Yehudis which is why Yidis and Hudes as sisters is not weird to me.

I think most people would think they are the same name in different pronunciation.
Someone speaking in your(?) dialect of Yiddish would pronounce it Yidis.
I would pronounce it as Yehudis , which could be shortened to Yudis or Hudis. It wouldn't occur to me that Hudis would be from Hadassah. (I'd expect "Dassi" or "Dassa" as the nickname).
I'm not sure how many Yiddish speakers are calling their kids Hadas... correct me if I"m wrong, but that is a modern Israeli name.

Open to hear about naming patterns I've never heard of though - I"m sure there are many Smile

eta: also Hadas has the stress on the 2nd syllable

Fascinating - I stand corrected.
I would never have figured it out had you not spelled it out.
Just goes to show how with all our cultural openness and exposure, (and the same Torah!!) it's still possible to completely misunderstand a name (or anything else!).

What is that name based on? Is it from Hadassah or does it have a different Yiddish meaning?

How would you spell Yidis in Yidish?

I guess anyone who would be using the form Yidis, wouldn't have that mixup....

The other version would be Yehudit and Hadas Smile

Yides is יהודית (but some people may write יודית)
It is pretty common for Yiddish speakers to drop the "hei" like with יודא for יהודה or יושע for יהושע and with names like אברהם.
Hudes is הדס
And yes, Hudes is an acceptable name in Chassidish circles. Not as common as Rivky and Chany, but as common as Nichy or Sheva.

They are two different names - one is pesha and the other is pessil. They are spelled totally different. One with a samach and one with a shin.
