If you only go in to say mazel tov and you're not very close to the person? Also if you do stay for the meal what would you give for someone distant vs someone close...thanks!

Clearly it is not the norm in most areas. There are many threads on this topic.

No gift unless staying for the meal.
Sometimes I’ll buy something pretty if I really like the person, and I’m not going bc I just don’t feel like staying for the meal.

If you’re close enough to be invited, and close enough to get dressed and show up, you’re close enough to give a gift. Much smaller if you only stay a short while. A gift card to a local wine store that would cover a decent bottle of wine (or a bottle of wine). A small gift from their registry, like a hand mixer, or kitchen linens.

We generally give $360 for friends to $540 for very close friends.

Anon by I don’t want your wedding invites. Hi

I get invitations daily in the mail. I only attend immediate family like siblings and siblings in law or some cousins etc. I usually give $100-$200 as a gift for cousins, neighbors, etc. I prefer to not attend weddings so cannot comment on the meal. Siblings and siblings in law we usually buy something they didnt get like a couch, chandelier, rug, etc. and split a sheva brachos. My employee gets paid vacation and $1,000 bonus for a wedding and $500 for a baby. Random people get nothing or a regifted gift. I dont want to be busy with checks open for a long time...
