My 10yo DS has some sort of reading issue and it’s hard to put my finger on what. It was never bad enough for the teachers to see any issue with it so I guess they never mentioned anything but when he reads to me I can see that it is hard for him. The issue does not seem to be vocabulary, he understands the words and recognizes them quickly (he’s actually very good at puzzles where you need to find a word in scrambled letters), but when it comes to reading sentences, passages, entire pages things get messy - he does not start st beginning, read every word to the end of the line. He scans, guesses, reads a word here and there, I’m not sure...and then just kind of gets tired of it. So reading short things like rashis, comics, one line here and there is fine, but when he needs to read more he is reluctant about it and lazy and stops a million times, forgets what he read- it’s clearly hard for him but I don’t know what the problem is or if there is a solution.
What could this be and is there anything to do about it in terms of therapy or exercises or something? Did I miss the window and he is too old for any sort of intervention?
Please help! I know something is off but just don’t understand these things enough to know what it is.

Not an expert but had a similar issue with a kid. A full psychodidactic evaluation can usually help identify specific issues with reading/learning.

It's not a magic solution but it can help figure out which exercises will be most effective.

I don't know how his age will affect eligibility for subsidized intervention wherever you live, but intervention in general is possible at any age.

ETA - in Israel you can get just the "didacti" part of the test done, for a reduced price. IOW they look only at learning-related issues, nothing emotional. Maybe check if that's an option wherever you are.

Maybe it is a visual problem where the eyes don't track together? This could cause fatigue, loss of place.

To check if it is a phonics problem check if your child can read nonsense words.
Google it to get a list of nonsense words.

Just skimming your observations about short vs long texts, I would head straight for vision and visual processing testing.

Seems like he is putting in a great amount of effort to read and therefore gets tired midway.

Don’t know for sure but maybe he is a strong decoder so when he sees a word he uses those skills to read it. But you need to read paragraphs you need to say words automatically without deciding it. Just see it and say it. Like when you see a face you don’t have to think hard about where the persons eyes and mouths are placed and exact eye color to know who it is. You see him and know him.

Just a suggestion, maybe doing dr kilpatchricks program can work. It’s a phonemic awareness type of program. It’s fun and easy to do. It helps with orthographic mapping. Which is how we store words and strengthens automaticity.

Thanks everyone for their input.
I’m in the NY area - where would I go to have these things evaluated?

Replying once more to bump this and ask all the kind women who replied earlier - please give me the “idiot guide” - where do I go to evaluate if this is visual, didactic...etc? I’m in the NY area, I’d rather obviously not pay more than I have to but willing to pay if needed. Do I look for an agency? What do I ask for? Like literally give me the steps please! No idea where to start.

My DS has struggled with this. It's a challenge.

I'm not in NY, but in my state, I could request a reading evaluation from the DOE.

We're working on it by giving him questions that require him to slow down and read carefully.

It sounds like a tracking problem. His brain and eyes are not working together that is why he is getting tired.

I work for an Optometrist in Westchester who specializes in prism glasses for this. If you would like info let me know. Or if you would like to do vision therapy I know an OT in Brooklyn.

Has he had his eye checked?
If he can read isolated words well, then his eyes need to be checked.

You first want to visit a developmental optometrist to rule out vision. Search for past threads, I'm sure there have been recommendations here.

Next you want to evaluate for dyslexia. DOE evaluation does NOT do this. It's inexplicable and I'm starting to see some advocacy pushing for it. If you're able to just privately get a psychoeducational evaluation on your own, that would be ideal. If you hope to get reimbursed by DOE down the line, you may need to go through their process first and then counter it - but that's a huge hassle and if you can just deal with $500-1000 or so for a private eval it would be a lot easier, just make sure they provide a full written report in case you need to prove anything to anyone.

Here is a link to a nonsense word test. I would do that first because it is free:

http://teacher.scholastic.com/.....t.pdf

When yr ds sees "lat" he may panic and say I can't read it. write cat and ask him to read it.
Then tell him "lat" rhymes with cat.

If he can't read them, it could be he needs remedial phonics instruction.

Here is an article on visual therapy

Your pediatrician should be able to guide as to who to contact. Also contact your local public school special education department and find out information about having him tested. That would be your cheapest option- free- except you really half to push. They will have you complete a number of documents and have your son's teachers fill out evaluations. Tell his teachers to enhance what they write- don't be insulted or hurt. The worse it sounds the more likely they will have to test him. Also have them include how this socially impacts him- he doesn't read in class, his friends laugh at him or is afraid his friends will laugh at him, it socially isolates him.etc.. whether it is true or exaggerated unfortunately its a bit of a game you have to play.

Also speak with your pediatrician for referral to a pediatric ophthalmologist who specializes in functional and developmental vision.

I got a great piece of advice once- You are your child's bets and only advocate. Keep pushing and trust your Mamma instincts!

I am a reading specialist and I work with dyslexic children . You did not miss the window and it is not too late for intervention . I’ve taught kids older than 10 to read .
