I agree with what your saying. Etka Gittel's plots move very slowly

I think it’s because they’re first serialized and then made into books. Magazine serials are stretched out to cover more weeks.

I know it's for kids, but The Exiles of Crocodile Island is one of my favorite Jewish books.

Agree about Sun Inside Rain.

I liked Avner Gold's books too though I haven't read them since my teen years so not sure if still appreciate them.
There's another kids historical series I used to love. Can't seem to remember the name. One was called the Lion Tamer. They were also great

Oh my ... I love reading Jewish books but that is one book I had to force myself to get halfway through and finally gave up ...

Surprised at some of the suggestions here...
A lot of what people have suggested are not light, modern day novels. If you want something like that etka Gittel Schwartz doesn’t write like that.. exiles if crocodile island is not a book written about here and now...
The plot of Many of books people recommend took place eras ago..
Maybe that’s what you had in mind but I don’t want you to be disappointed.

This! Many of the historical books are heavy. That's why I like Sara Wiederblank so much! Her books are modern day and so relatable, with great character development and I can tell she really "gets" people. IMO they're very well written and light.

Talking about historical books, I remember reading a book about an Egyptian during Galus Mitzrayim who wasn't affected by the makkos and then discovered he was Jewish. Wish I can remember the name. The book was available in Hebrew, English, and Yiddish. I highly recommend it.

I think you'll find that many committed readers prefer historical fiction. Getting to visit different places and times in a relatable way is such a treat!
But yes if OP is not a big reader and prefers something light and modern most of these suggestions wouldn't work

I would call myself a critical reader too. Hard to find good kosher reading material. I love historical fiction with a human interest twist. But needs to be extremely well written. Sarah Wiederblank just doesn't cut it. Any suggestions?
