Can someone explain cutting all refined sugar? I understand sweets, junk, juices/soda. What about regular food? Nothing bought? No sugar/honey in, say, sauces or dressings?

I lost 20 lbs. dramatically reducing sugars and white flour. I allow myself honey. Maybe some sauces but not much, I never use that stuff on say chicken anyway.

I’m following the weight watchers plan.
Yes, I once tried it before and I couldn’t do it so I claimed “it didn’t work “ but now I’m committed and seeing the weight come off so it motivates me to keep sticking with it.
I don’t need to loose as much as you but I’m part of their chat group where people post how they are doing and I’m always amazed that people loose 100+ Lbs on this plan! It’s amazing to see people posting their before, during and after pictures.
It doesn’t matter what you tried before. What ever you decide to do about weight loss, it will only work if you stick with it .
The HARDEST part is the first week as you are figuring out what you can eat on the plan. After that first week you’ll see that you really CAN do it!
I highly recommend weight watchers!

I'm considering WW. Which color are you on?

I respectfully disagree. Even fruits and vegetables contain carbs. Cutting out refined sugar would be a huge step. Refined sugar acts as a drug and makes you crave more and more. But gastric bypass may be your best bet. From what I understand the more complete procedure available has been proven to change the biome in your stomach which helps maintain the weight loss. Your metobolism essentially changes to that of one who has a naturally thin metabolism.

My husband needed to lose 75 lbs. His weight had been yo-yoing all his life. He did not want to have surgery and the 2 nutritionists he had gone to were of no help. Finally he found a nutritionist in Brooklyn who among other restrictions most significantly forbade refined sugar of any type. He also only permitted Truvia, no other sweetener. My husband lost all the weight and has kept it off for over 6 years bli ayin horah. He is in his fifties and had never been able to maintain his weight loss until he cut out the refined sugar. He is able to stick to his diet because he no longer experiences the cravings that sugar causes. I personally eat sugar and love diet soda so I am not preaching healthy life-style choices. I am just reporting the wonderful result of cutting out refined sugar. I wish you much hatzlocha in your quest for health. You will feel like a new person and it will be well worth it!

how long did it take to lose that weight?
cutting out only refined sugars looks doable

Who told you three years? It’s 18 months at the most. I was so unhealthy and had a horrific pregnancy with my second - couldn’t get pregnant alone and the pregnancy was a nightmare with major medical issues with both me and baby. I never never never want to go through that again. I had the GB. Lost 100 lbs (still losing) I have a completely new life. I’m healthy, I’m fit and I FEEL GOOD! The surgery itself is really really not such a major deal. Are you afraid of the actual surgery or the life changes that you’ll need to make?

I would recommend trying Intermittent Fasting. There is a lot of information about it online and on Youtube.

The way I did it was I ate only during an 8-hour period (I ate between 12:00 pm and 8:00 pm) and fasted for 16 hours. I lost 30 pounds in 1.5 months.

While you fast for the 16 hours, you can drink water, tea, etc. During the 8-hour period, you only eat 2 meals. It's very important to eat the healthy amount of calories (between 1500-2000, depending on your height/age), but you only eat 2 meals. No snacking. All your calories are distributed between the 2 meals.

It's about keeping your insulin levels low by not snacking a lot through the day. That will help you lose weight and keep it off. It will be hard at first to fast until 12:00 pm (or whenever you decide for your 8-hour period to start) but it will be so worth it and it will get easier very quickly.

It really worked for me. Good luck

Edit: Here's the book I read that really helped me understand Intermittent Fasting and its benefits. The Complete Guide to Fasting by Dr. Jason Fung

wow sounds so interesting. gonna check it out thanks

No, no, it isn’t. Do some research. Ketones are fuel as well as any carbs needed can be made from amino acid in protein. Plus, she has 100 pounds of fat on her. She could live for months on that. Seriously.

I cut out sugar, sweetener, starch, fruit, grain. I lost eiggty fast and the other twevty over the next year and a half. Coming up on maintaining the first 80 for two years. No cravings. Amazing energy. Amazing peace.

You’re welcome to reach out to me. I still have 80-100 to go but I am insanely healthy and feel great! The peace is mind blowing!

so what DO you eat? mind sharing?

Not at all. It was uncomfortable for a few days but I wouldn’t say painful. As a matter of fact I just had my gallbladder out and I thought that was more painful than gastric bypass. It’s a huge, life altering decision and I did a TON of research. I seriously could not be happier with my decision.

your gallbladder out due to the surgery? that's my greatest fear

Yes, this. The keto diet is a real thing. I think it's maximum 40 carbs a day. From all sources. Some say it's net carbs but others are machmir....

Keto/Atkins diets are unhealthy in the long run as they work by tricking the body to go into starvation mode and break down its own tissue for energy. As a one-time plan to lose a large amount of weight, fine, but those who do it repeatedly in yo-yo dieting or just living on them perpetually are doing their bodies a tremendous disservice in the long run.

I can tell you how I lost 90lbs. Took about 10 months. Maintaining that weight loss for 16.5 years (except for gaining and then quickly dropping about 20 lb during two pregnancies.

No sugar
No flour
1 fruit per day(low glycemic index.. ie not pears, grapes, watermelon etc)
No starchy veg (ie peas, corn, potatoes)
4 Tbs fat per day
No snack between meals
Weigh or measure everything I eat
This is my OA/greysheet program
I am free of the prison of obesity and ill health. My triglycerides, cholesterol, sugar, bp are normal). I am free free free of cravings so I eat what I want because I want the food that keeps my mind sane and my body healthy.
Difficult to start but miraculous and simple when the benefits kick in.

I'd love to do OA
I'd love the support and have been to meetings
I simply can't imagine how I will manage to prepare all these meals

Due to rapid weight loss, yes. But it really wasn’t a major deal. The gallstone attacks I was having though were a big deal. Still don’t regret my decision to do surgery for a second. And I would do it all again. And also there are many many people that have the surgery who don’t have any issues with gallbladder.

If you would consider surgery, consider gastric bypass. Has the least effects on your lifestyle. My mother did it, and lost over 100 lbs that she had been carrying for over 20 years and nothing helped (the sea how diet did, but very hard to keep off). She is a huge proponent of the GB surgery, and would be happy to answer any questions you have if you'd like... (PM me)
If you don't want to go the surgical route here are some tips that make all the difference while dieting:
Replace meals with healthier foods, but DON'T SKIP THEM-that will make you binge while hungry and give up very quickly. EAT LOTS OF FOOD, but low-calorie ones. Take special care not to skip breakfast or you metabolism will sleep until you do...
EXERCISE. My personal favorite: try PIYO by beachbody which you can do from the comfort of your home with only a yoga mat. Or join the gym or swim or do cardio, but it makes all the difference.
Don't eat late at night (after 8/9).
Eating low carb foods will change your life. I'm not pro-keto at all, but cutting on carbs will make you lose quicker, you'll have more energy, less cravings, and is just easier to digest.

isn't the bypass the hardest surgery from all types of weight loss surgeries?
