What's a good space efficient way to start seedlings?

There are special seedling trays you can use, but do need hundreds of seedlings?

I've used egg shells, or the 'shells' of oranges and lemons. Also, toilet paper rolls cut in half. That way you don't need to pull the seedlings out of your pots when you transplant them. You just stick the while thing in the ground. But my garden is very small and manageable. I don't know how much you want to grow.
