Yes, wouldn't it be nice if everyone has ample emergency funds? |
My positing everyone having emergency funds was rhetorical.
I am just commenting that people seem to find it easy to justify why they *need* to not pay their landlord because their landlord *should* have ample funds so that rent isn't necessary to cover their expenses.
There are many people who are approved for a mortgage who don't have ample excess income. There are people on this thread WITHOUT tenants who are worried about making mortgage payments if they don't work. Should they have not bought their homes?
I am not siding with anyone - just repeating this so I am not taken out of context.

A tenant should always be paying rent. I'm talking about an extension or some sort of payment plan when tenant is having a hard time. More so, when tenant is being charged top dollar for poor accommodations.

Or, someone that borrowed money to buy a huge home, cuts a tiny section to rent out. Is not up to code, is missing some basics and charges as much as possible to afford his mortgage. While he's wining and dining in a big spacious home, tenant is scraping by. When hard times fall, I feel worse for the tenant than the landlord. Too bad. |
That is pretty extreme.
Obviously no one has sympathy for a slum landlord who is exploiting people.
I am assuming a normal landlord/tenant relationship in which the landlord provides a safe decent relatively well maintained apartment for fair market value.

To add: hospital beds are 25%-35% elective non emergency surgeries. In NY it’s been suggested that soon these will not be scheduled to free up beds.

My father is going to help me. My job is reducing working days the next 2 weeks without pay. I have to bring my daughter with me or my husband has to bring her with him. We don't have the kind of jobs that can be done from home. I am thankful I have my father or I would be even more stressed than I already am.

Regarding rent, most people that I know had to give a month rent down payment, this can be used in this situation when you actually do not have funds to pay rent.
It’s a serious situation that many are worried about. My husband straight out told me if we’re in quarantine I can’t keep it otherwise we won’t have money. And he’s right we’ll have to face that when it comes to it because no way I’m letting him work if we’re quarantined but it’s scary.
Supposedly by declaring a state of emergency the governor and president cleared up a ton of money to help the economic losses. Supposedly businesses will get special loans/relief money to help them through and to pay sick days etc.

Ok, but that will lead to debt. At some point the bills must be paid, and if State governments forces people to let others live in their properties for free, everyone would sell for pennies on the dollar, because at least they would have something rather than nothing. Who says the economy will just pick right back up after this virus runs its course? People might be in long-term debt from this economic situation. And that really concerns me. How do we prevent this?

Maybe people will start to consider the radical ideas of Universal Basic Income, Democratic Socialism etc.
