The books takes place in the early 1900s in New York. The main character is a girl who goes to public school and is a rabbi’s daughter - she wants to help her friend learn about Judaism. I think that the author is related to M Jakubowicz (mother in law of M Jakubowicz)?
Also another similar book of historical fiction where they are learning about Judaism and end up going to the countryside and having lessons there? Might be the same book?
I was terrifically impressed with the writing and inspired when I read this and I want to buy it for my house so that all my kids can read it (especially now).

Was the book from a Jewish publisher or a secular publisher?

I think Jewish. It was an old book with no picture on the cover. Very detailed. Kind of like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or All of a Kind Family in the description of the Lower East Side and early 1900s immigrant Jews and their struggles. But it had a religious kiruv inspiration angle. I was surprised at how well written it was.
