We were laughing about this on Shabbos, but truthfully I wonder about it: we say that anyone who is hungry should come in and eat, but this year we aren’t allowed to invite anyone in at all! Any thoughts on this?

Pikuach nefesh and safety concerns always takes precedent over most mitzvos.

Wrap it up for the hungry people to take home.

My question really more about “why are we saying this?”

We live in Israel. It always feels funny saying השתא הָכָא, לְשָׁנָה הַבָּאָה בְּאַרְעָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל.

But to be honest, it's not much of an invitation anyway, since you are already sitting down to the meal.

You mean why are we saying halachma Anya at all if we can not do it?
Maybe it’s something like just for the thought, we wish we could invite everyone in. It’s never really something practical, no one hears it and no one comes in other years.

A lot of things we say is more of tradition than practical

Why is it funny? You may be physically located in the land that has always been Eretz Yisroel but right now it's not really "ours". Yes, there's a "Jewish" state but we all know it's not what we have been waiting for through all these years of galus.

My kids were wondering whether or not this year they should say "...ווען דער טאטע קומט אהיים פון שׁול"

Agreed. We have only half conquered our land, and it is still filled with enemies and not enough of our people. And calling it a Jewish state is pretty hard too. It's a state full of Jews, but we have a long way to go until it is in accordance with the Torah.
