When I make challa the strands kind of come together and the top looks like one mush. Why can't you see the individual braids.

Try coating them in flour

either the dough is too wet (too much water in the dough)
or you let them rest for too long after braiding...

Re the flour suggestion: I generally don't have OP's problem but yes, it's a flour issue. Devory Heller fills a salt shaker with flour to lightly coat the challah, IIRC from a presentation of hers.
