Can I machine wash wool pants on gentle cycle, that say dry clean only on label?

I've done it. Use woolite and cold water only. No dryer.

I wouldn't risk it even if your machine has a "hand wash' cycle . Even if the wool itself was preshrunk, which you can't be sure of, the thread, facings, interfacings, pockets, zipper and other parts are made of different fibers and may shrink unevenly, and any adhesives used may dissolve.

I once read that some labels read "dry clean" and some "dry clean only". If it doesn't say "only", it can def be machine washed.
I've machine washed wool clothing on gentle or hand washcycle. Def no dryer. But it's always a chance.

As zaq wrote, it’s not the wool fabric that is the issue as wool can be washed with water. It’s actually better to wash a sweater than have it dry cleaned. However wool pants can have parts that are not safe to be washed and so the garment can look terrible after it is washed even if the wool itself is still fine.
Can you spot clean the pants to tide you over until they can be dry cleaned.
