Out of the blue he decided he doesn't want the pacifier. I know it's not the best thing anyway for a child but I really need him to take the pacifier.
How else is a child this age supposed to self soothe?

You will need a higher tolerance for his kvetches and cries

Every kid is different.
At 6 months, DS ditched the paci, but became very attached to his evening bottle.
DD never liked a paci, but she was and is deeply attached to several of my headscarves, and will only sleep with them.
There are ways to self-soothe: bottle, thumb, imma-scent, favourite soft toy or blankie or cloth, leaning their face a certain way etc. It sounds like you'll need going through an adjustment period while your baby figures out what his new thing is!

Maybe try a different one. You might have to try a few different companies.
