Live in Israel, grew up in England.

I speak English and Hebrew.

And high school level French - I like trying to converse in French when I get an opportunity, I am amazed at the words that suddenly come back to me.

Yes, but the way ppl make fun of non native speakers, combined with my anxiety... It's way too scary to contemplate. So I just listen to my mom talk Hebrew/ watch Hebrew tv clips and asks her questions.

Really?
So you think it is not nice to make fun of language mistakes non native speakers make?

I think so too...
Actually the Israelis are really nice in helping people learn hebrew. You can interrupt their conversation any time and ask what a word means. And they will correct you for free... Every Israeli is a hebrew teacher!
So I think spoken hebrew is one of the easiest languages to learn, because you get so much support from the native speakers....

Yes, really. Any language where someone is trying to learn, there's the one jerk who makes fun of your mistakes, and coupled with my anxiety. Bam! It makes me incredibly self conscious.

And how could you even ask the second question? I don't care that the rest of the post you said you don't agree ... The way you phrase the question rubs me wrong.

Especially, since I wasn't talking about Hebrew specifically. But any language.

I've had severe second hand embarrassment when I've seen on this board people making fun of non native speakers writing.

I have to thank you for your post. The lashon hara quip is actually a light bulb moment for me. Not going to derail this thread to discuss, but I am going to discuss it in real life with my chaburah. Thank you so much!

Same here...

I completey agree with you. I am speaking about any language. And I am speaking about any kind of mocking. Also making fun about names in foreign languages that might sound "funny" in your native language.

When I come across someone making fun of language errors a non-native speakers makes, I lose respect for the mocker. I find this behavior primitive and reprehensible.

On the other hand, many people, and, what I found astonishing, many users on this forum think it's completely OK...

I was just happy to find someone who agrees with me on this forum... And I opened a spinoff with a poll, to check whether there is more than one person on this forum who agrees with me...

Also, I observed that people who are not good at foreign languages or who speak just one language tend to make more fun of mistakes non-native speakers make. And people who speak a few languages just tend not to find the mistakes funny... That's also a reason why I find this kind of mocking primitive. It shows a lack of openness towards the world... and an unjustified hubris...
