We are naming after a grandmother Baila/Barbra and are thinking of calling the baby Bella. Would that work in Israel? How would you spell it in Hebrew? Any other variation suggestions?

It's not unheard of because it's used among Russian immigrants. בלה

Bar would be the obvious Hebrew version of Barbra, but I am personally not a big fan, maybe because I am too used to English.

Bella isn't a Hebrew name. People have heard of it, but would probably see it and assume she's an immigrant. JMHO names you have to explain get old fast.

Baila would be a normal name in a hassidic community or some litvish hareidi communities, but would be unusual anywhere else.

Bilha and Bruria are Hebrew names with a similar sound, but I wouldn't give either. (Just getting that out there for the record.)

What about a name with a different sound, but similar meaning? Or using Baila as a middle name?

I've heard of Baila, never Bella, in Israel. What is the meaning of Baila?

בלה is totally fine in DL circles. I know several.
In chareidi circles it's usually Baila.

My MIL was Barbara, her Hebrew name was Batsheva. We thought about using Batya.

Thanks for all the reply's. This is not very encouraging.... even though we do both like the name. We could add a name, but don't know what to add that would fit.
