Is staying in a Motel this summer (in a state near New York), SAFE or UNSAFE?

You have no way to know who was in the room before you, and how well it was cleaned after the people left.

How can it be made safe?

Are most tourist attractions (like mansions, etc) closed anyhow?

The doctors we've spoken to have said that staying at a respectable national chain hotel this summer should be safe. I would be more uneasy to stay in a motel with less uniform cleaning standards. If you do stay there, you could ask for a room that's been empty for the previous day or 2, but in the busy summer season, no guarantees.

Wherever you stay, it's a good practice to use Lysol wipes to wipe down surfaces like doorknobs, phones, tables where you may eat, counters, etc. And if you're really nervous, you can bring your own linens, though that may be overkill.

Many tourist attractions have reopened in limited form - I.e. by reservation only, not full capacity, masks and SD required, not all components available, etc.

I hear you Op and wouldn't do this or be comfortable doing it unless there was a really compelling reason in which case I would scrub it down, spray, disinfect, and use my own bedding.

I just took a road trip with my kids. We only stayed at air bnb houses.
As to attractions being open, it really depends where you go/what you do. Maybe you can give us some specifics, and we can help you out.

If you don’t feel it’s safe and don’t feel comfortable then don’t do it

I personally felt safe and comfortable on our little getaway this weekend

Where have others gone and felt the places were cleaned well (driving distance from NYC)?

Did you stay in motels all the way through or you went by trailer?

I just stayed at Wyndham resort in Alexandria, VA. Most definitely not a motel but if you stay somewhere decent and reputable you should be fine

Alternately you could just stay home

My personal opinion is that everyone should stick to their own state and avoid motels though unfortunately I'm in the minority.

Unless I go very close to my home (up to 3 hour drive) I have to stay in a motel.

If I want to go upstate even in NY, that means staying in a motel,

Why is staying in a air bnb better than a motel? Who says they disinfect between guests?

I always bring Clorox wipes wherever I go and give everything a quick wipe-down when we first get there. I’m mainly worried about the linen (and even more so after seeing that video - yukk!!!). I don’t know what to do about that. (I don’t have a queen sized bed or I’d bring my own . . .)

It’s just my own personal feeling. There are cleaning and disinfecting fees, at least in the houses where we stayed. Everything was really nice and clean.
