Has anyone else seen this? Where all these everyday items turn out to be cake? I find it so funny/strange? I wish I could past the Twitter video. But if you click the link you'll see for yourself.

They really creep me out.

Not everything has to taste like cake!

A good watermelon tastes way better than cake.

When I slice into turkey I want to eat turkey, not cake!

Then you have the gross, horrible ones like very realistic-looking babies or dogs.

They probably don't taste all that great but must be great fun to make!

I agree with Amother Turquoise... It does not appeal to me at all. Or the fancy Chanel handbag cakes... That's just tacky IMO.

I don't think it counts if it's fondant, because fondant is fondant, not cake.

There's a very nicely constructed cake inside.

The same could be said if the outside were made of modeling clay or bricks.

Which is why I use chocolate clay when I make cakes like these (in concept. My skills pale in comparison to these).

But there are fondant-like substances that are quite tasty - rolled buttercream, fondant made out of marshmallow fluff, the above-mentioned chocolate clay, marzipan.

The only substance I've heard of that's completely awful to eat is gumpaste and that's usually used in a different manner...

There's an element of "wow" when such a cake is used as a centerpiece but I always want it to be eaten - that's the point, after all is said and done - and I do my best to make sure it tastes good.

The thing is, some of those cakes look like very realistic versions of another food. So if you serve luscious looking pizza and it turns out to be cake, I’ll be disappointed. It actually makes me feel a little nauseous.

Most of those cakes are incredibly cool, but I'm thinking of the poor lady who ends up with the toilet paper cake instead of the real thing... LOL

Oh my goodness that toilet paper cake. Way to celebrate corona lockdown.

There are some frum ladies who do this sort of thing. The one I tried was actually pretty tasty.

Meh.
Like the "object" candles that were popular in the 70s, they're nothing more than an art form. With enough fondant, you can make anything. Personally I prefer cake that looks like cake. When so much is invested in the presentation, taste and freshness often suffer.

Come to think of it, I feel the same way about people.

Amazing artistry! But does it taste good? I keep thinking that all that fondant and clayey stuff tastes too sweet.

Also, why would anyone want a cake shaped like a Croc or a pump shampoo bottle? Maybe it's for a corporate party...?
