My one year old has always been fussy. He has allergy issues that took a while to figure out (so from 3-5 months was barely eating and very unhappy). Has a very delicate stomach and often has bouts of gas/ pain. Only ever falls asleep in his own crib, with noise machine, darkness and alone. Never relaxes in my arms etc. never fell asleep I. My bed or in my arms. Doesn’t even calm down when I try.

Never ever (since 5 months maybe) falls asleep in a carriage or in a car- we’ve driven for 6 hours AT NIGHT with him and he alternated screaming and eating playing the whole way, couldn’t even dose off.

( there’s also a component that’s more intense around me, so he doesn’t go down to sleep nicely if I put him down, won’t resettle at night with me. Will very seldom play nicely near me, more often want to be held the entire time which I don’t fight but holds her back- he’s just cranky in my arms all day)

Besides for the practical implications- my husband is on call all day and night. I am exhausted and sad to see him unhappy!

I don’t know who to ask for help. The pediatrician is useless because there aren’t specific symptoms to treat - he’s social and when he’s happy he’s adorable.

Baby trauma therapy? Massage therapy? A Chiropracter? I don’t really know if I believe in these things but I’m desperate.

Anyone have an experience like this?

If I were in your shoes I would try craniosacral therapy.

He doesn’t nap AT ALL when he goes. Comes home like a zombie. Been trying to bring him to a drop in between naps...

Sounds like his gut is a mess and it’s affecting his neurology via the vagus nerve. Cranio sacral is a great idea but you would also need to address the underlying gut issues. Most neurotransmitters are produced in the gut, including those necessary for sleep (serotonin and dopamine which are then broken down to form melatonin). Allergies are often a gut issue, because when undigested proteins leave the gut via loose junctures, the immune system doesn’t recognize them and mounts an attack. He may also have insufficient beneficial bacteria and enzymes to break down histamine, which also messes with the brain. The gas and pain sound like you may not yet have identified all his allergies/sensitivities. Or he might have bacterial overgrowth going on.

Have you done a complete elimination diet? For starters you can add a digestive enzyme ( trienza makes a good chewable) and a good quality probiotic.

Yes I can relate, I have a 2 year old that sounds just like that, also with unresolved allergies. She lately has crazy irational mood swings and I'm going out of mind. I actually just made her an appt at a craniosacrel therapist. I will keep you posted how it goes iyh

Why don’t you try with early intervention? Maybe OT would calm him down?

My doctor didn’t wanna refer us. Is that how it usually goes ? (Doctor referral?) or is there something else I can try before paying privately which is my next step...

That’s strange that he doesn’t want to help...

Pick up the phone and call them. You don’t need a referral.

Or do you have a children’s specialized hospital near you? They have a great ot gym. But you will need a prescription for it.

As I was reading op, I was thinking cst would be a great idea. Then I scrolled down and the first reply said the same!

I never really believed in this stuff until a specialist we took my son to advised us to do a few sessions before and after a procedure. I rolled my eyes and scheduled an appt, becasue y'know, doctor's orders. I was totally blown away. Things that I thought were just the way he is changed drastically in a short time, in a good way. So now I'm a believer.

Yiddes Frankel is in Rockland County and very experienced. Diane Diamond is in Westchester are, not sure exactly where. I know people travel to see both of them.

First step find a different pediatrician for a second opinion.
I agree strongly with working on his gut health.

OT will act like a bandaid in this case, In the best case scenario. You have to get a really really good one to see any differences.

I second (third?) CST and allergy testing.

One question, did your child have a traumatic birth? A friend of mine had a DD who's birth was very traumatic, her umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck three times! Surprised

The girl was always unhappy and fussy, never settling down. My friend didn't believe in CST, but she was so desperate she went anyway when someone gave her a referral. Three sessions later all problems resolved, and never came back. Now the girl is a delightful 16 year old, and completely well adjusted.
