That’s great. My kids failed everything on zoom. Please let them go back to school.

Most kids did not do well at all on zoom. It is critical that our kids get back into a classroom.

I think that school needs to open but parents who work will need plan B because mildly ill children may need to stay home and if anyone tests positive then schools are cancelled.
I would imagine that older teachers won't be able to work in the classroom.

We want school to open with proper protocols and yes we are at the same time very concerned about coronavirus.

All the pediatric AMA and CDC came out in favor of opening in person.

If someone cannot risk it due to their own personal situation and risk factors they should have option of remote.

AAP came out in favor of reopening if safety conditions can be met. CDC was pressured to change its advice.

So the question is really: Is it safe enough in your area, with the plans your school has? We aren't all going to have the same answer to that question.

Camps were running thru the summer - why would schools be any more worrisome?
The day camp where we have sent in normal years made their entire program an outdoor program. Schools won't be able in most cases to do all programming outdoors. And definitely not as it gets colder.

Thank you very much!

Was this putting OP's question down really necessary?

Why would school be cancelled? If someone gets sick, then everyone in that class or division will have to stay home for 14 days to see if symptoms develop and then would take a covid test and would resume class as usual. So it's 2 weeks of Zoom and that's it.

Yes, me. I do not want to send my kids to school. They are very bored and some want to return very badly, but even with masks and social distancing I am afraid of outbreaks. I am afraid when I read that the virus may infect a child and lay dormant and cause problems chas vshalom later in adulthood. I am afraid of children spreading the virus and chas vshalom infecting parents and grandparents. I wish we were all told we must do remote learning next year. I hate this situation, I find it a terrifying experiment.

I think it is a no win situation.

I want my kids back in school (they are not in camp right now) but I work with a geriatric population. I would love to quit, but that is that leaving my patients in a better place? Is that reasonable to do to my work family-to be the deserter? Oh and my family likes to eat, have a home, and healthcare. I will never get a job again in my field if I were to bail during the pandemic.
Right now my family "neurotically " SDs, I order my food on-line, have not been clothing shopping at all, and barely go to a store. I wear a n95 at work and whenever I leave my house, but what happens when my kids are asymptotic, I'm asymptotic, but I share it with your Bubbie?
I feel a huge sense of responsibility on my head.
BTW-we have been so good at SDing that we don't have antibodies-not that that definitively means anything.

I really want my kids to go to back to school, and I'll send them when the schools open, which they plan to do, but I'm not comfortable with it. I don't think the kids will comply with SD as needed, I think there's tons of cross exposure from different homes/schools/communities, and I think schools will have to shut down with no notice and no time to plan if there are confirmed cases

I live in a state where almost no public schools are opening in a normal way. Why do the private schools they can do it safely?

I can speak for my city (Chicago). I think for many many public schools the actual building is a huge impediment for reopening. There are schools that have not a capital improvement since they were built 30 years ago. Bathrooms and HVAC systems are old and outdated. Class sizes are up to 32 kids. Its a minefield.

My kids yeshiva is 5 years old. It has a brand new hvac system, all bathrooms have touchless sinks and toilets, class sizes are 19 kids. Its a lot easier to reopen that kind of building. The considerations are not even the same as the public school that I happen to live across the street from.

Nothing will ever be 100% safe. Not even keeping your child home. You have to do what makes most sense.
Also, for those who are very worried and are playing it very safe, no doctor will ever be able to say "As of tomorrow, you can resume normal life. You will be 100% safe." That will never happen.

Me, too. I am very afraid.

Our school just sent us their re-opening guidelines. I read them but I can’t imagine how they will be able to enforce them. I can’t imagine what school experience will be like, starting in September.

I honestly think that in person class should start one or 2 weeks after sukkos. People will be getting together over yom tov (they shouldn't be) and possibly spread the virus. Also they can see how things are working out for the public schools. There is so few days of school anyways between the start of school and yom tov. Does anyone else think this is a good idea??

Agreed. I was so mad at first when our school was too frum for zoom. Then I saw how my daughter with adhd acted during her phone classes and was so thankful no one could see her!

Many of the schools are saying this, but I’m telling you as a teacher it’s not going to work. A teacher can’t effectively teach both the kids in the room and the kids on zoom at the same time. We’re either at the computer or with our live students. We can’t be in both places. Many of my classroom methods don’t translate into zoom, and the zoom methods I perfected this year don’t translate back into the classroom. One group will be getting a very inferior education.
We need to think out of the box. Find some way to shuffle the kids so you have dl classes and in person classes. If you only have one class per grade you can combine grades for now.

They’ll do even worse if they pass along the virus to one of their parents or grandparents chas veshalom

My kids aren’t going anywhere near their grandparents for a while. Every family is different so you can’t actually make that kind of blanket statement.

No because ps isn’t opening at all.
