Question: We just moved and need an awning/shlok for Sukkahs.
My DH is not handy in making one on his own, We're struggling financially. Should we get a simple leiters sukkah shlok for $1500 that we need to assemble and disassemble before/after yom tov?
Or should we get a Costum awning for $2500 to last for the year?

My opinion?
You don’t need a shlock OR awning.

They are both not requirements for sukkos.

Especially if your struggling financially, I would skip it.

My DH wants a shlok. The question is which one. We live in a state where it rains alot throughout sukkahs.

My opinion - don't get either this year, but start saving for a custom awning for the future.

(ETA: Sorry, I see cross-posted.)

We moved 4 years ago and our sukkah became bigger than we had till then. My DH used to put up a blue tarp shlock but with the bigger sukkah he had a hard time managing it. We keep on talking about putting up an awning but eventually, and so far no shlock and no awning. Maybe we'll use my unemployment money for it this year ... But if you're tight financially, you don't do anything. You come in when it rains. Your noy sukkah should be laminated or covered in hard plastic anyway and some things get ruined. its just the way it is.

Sorry to pile on, but I would never spend $1,500+ on a shlok if I was struggling financially

My question wasn't IF we should get anything at all.
I knew this advice before posting here.

The question was, is it worth investing in an awning vs. A temporary one for $1000 less.???
I'm not talking about spending $5000.

The answer is that yes, IMNSHO, it's worth investing in an awning.

But if you're financially struggling, now may not be the time.

Even if it rains alot in your state and your DH won't go inside to eat during sukkas?
When it rains,, We just pull the shlock down and continue eating outside...

A regular awning is a good investment because it lasts for years. Try asking the company if they'd let you pay in installments.

If we are going to be doing it eventually anyways, why not do it now? We can put it on a credit card and pay off eventually...

Is he aware that eating in a sukkah with a shlok is the same halachically as eating indoors?

eating in the sukka with a shlock is same as eating inside.
I'm the amother with no shlock and no awning. DH won't eat or drink (except water) m'chutz l'sukkah. If it rains, he either continues eating in the sukkah in the rain. Or he stops eating and resumes when the rain lets up.

everyone has diff feelings on this, but we would not put something on a credit card that we cant afford and pay off. cc debt adds up super quickly with insane interest... if you wait until next year, maybe you will have enough money up front.

First calculate how much money you'll be wasting on interest.

For reference, on a 15% APR card, $2500 is $32 a month in interest, or $384 a year.

That's my lower interest card. My other ones are 25% or so, so about $625 in interest a year.
