My baby's almost 6 months so I'll be starting solids. What do you start with?

Would you rather do purées or finger food?

Whatever you want. Mashed table food is great. Thin it out with water.

Love these ^^
You can put anything inside and get the baby used to all kinds of tastes - we used this for all kinds of fruits vegetables and proteins.
Baby oatmeal, mashed avocado, mashed bananas are all good to spoon feed
If you want to start with finger food do some research on Baby led weaning

You have to know how to serve it so that a 6 month old without pincer grasp can pick it up and eat it safely without choking

Just search up Baby Led Weaning and you'll thank me for life.
I'm onto my fourth kid doing baby led weaning and can't even imagine first foods any other way.

I started with soups first, cream of chicken or veggies from chicken soup etc
Then went onto applesauce with oatmeal jars, banana avocado cheerios etc
at this point at 11 months he eats everything
I did something in between baby led weaning and mashing, as it was small pieces but not the big pieces they suggest you start with
Good luck!

Your baby will gag at first as they learn to chew and swallow
As long as you don't panic and intervene they won't choke

Your baby was able to pick up small pieces at 6 months?

Yup not perfectly and I fed him soup and stuff but the banana and cheerios he picked up akwardly with like a big handful and tried stuffing into his mouth sideways... it was cute to watch, some got in and some didnt but in the end they learn pretty quickly
Flutes or veggies straws is another great starter snack as they can easily hold it in their hand and it melts beautifully and isn't a choking hazard at all

Just a note to OP on this -
It is very helpful to put the food in a suction bowl instead of straight on the tray so they can use the sides of the bowl to scoop up the food with their fists.
By 9ish months when they perfect the pincer grasp, they are fine if the food is on the tray.

Ask your pediatrician about bamba. I’ve heard recently that doctors are encouraging it at an early age.

Exposure to (regular, local)allergens is encouraged earlier than later

I did the purees for a few weeks and then moved on to foods they could feed themselves. That's just what I was most comfortable doing. Just so you know that's an option too if you aren't ready for baby-led right away.
