Hanachas tefillin question

My son will be putting on tefillin soon. He said that the boys start wearing hat and jacket when they begin wearing tefillin, but that some only do so for weekday morning. We are out of town yeshivish.
Any idea what is done? My husband doesn't know and won't ask. If what he says is true, can someone explain it? I tried to look for photos online and see it both ways.
If this is the case I have to rush to get a hat and jacket, I thought we had more time!

Either ask DH what he did at that age or have ds do what his classmates are doing

My husband is a Baal teshuva.... So....
I don't know why, but he doesn't want to ask around. That is why I came here.

Ask his rebbe or his classmates parents what the other boys do. Sometimes it is included with the schools dress code.

We live in Monsey all my boys and their friends wear a hat and jacket when davening shabbos and weekday from when they put on tefillin. They also wear white shirts only from hanachas tefillin.

Most boys do whatever their friends do. Also, maybe a rav would say to start wearing tefilin on his BM as u dont have a family minhag for 30 days.
But if u do the 30 days, let him be comfortable as there's no right or wrong.

In the Yeshivish areas they usually start wearing a jacket and weekday hat at the Hanochas Tefilin. Then at the BM they start with the Shabbos hat.

Interesting that they wear the hat only during the week.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. They wear the weekday hat on Shabbos also, up until the Bar Mitzvah.
