I remember that years ago, a list circulated for Americans in Israel of names you could give your kids to guarantee that they wouldn't be yordim.

I only remember Dudu for boys.

Girls' names included Nofit, Osnat, and Moran .

Or my personal favourite: Tahel. Beautiful in Hebrew, but in English...LOL

And there are also Israeli towns which will never have to worry about an Anglo influx - Kfar Pinnes, for example.

avoid Oshrit.

All the girls called her "O-Shriek" behind her back.

I'm surprised they didn't use the other, much more obvious alternative. maybe they knew they'd get in trouble for that.

Because it's pronounced Oshreet, with a long 'E' sound and the accent on the second syllable.

This was my immediate reaction as well, especially based on shriek, but it was punny anyway!

It’s like naming your kid Precious. I cringe when I meet people with that name.

I never thought of that for Tahel. Probably because I hear it with the emphasis on the first syllable. TA-hel, and after I'd met a few Yahels and a Tagel. But Yahel would have the same issue as Tahel.

Kfar Pinnes. LOL. It took me SO long to be able to say that or read it "like an Israeli." Also Rechov Pinnes in Jerusalem...

While I hear that, what about naming a kid Beautiful (Yaffa) or Blessing (Baruch) or Gift (Matan)?

I don’t like the name Torah but maybe it’s because it’s just not a normal name and feels try to hard. We have names with very intense meanings . “Hashem will have mercy “... I mean that’s intense. But Yirachmiel is a beautiful name (if a mouthful ).

Only give Torah if your last name is Sinai!

Or use it as a middle name and give the first name Matan!

Please don't... It seems irreverent to the actual Torah, imho...

I know two Zimratyas, they both go by Zimrat and live in the big city. I also know two Sinais - one is a girl and one is a boy (there's also Sinai Tor of course.....).

Sinai is a common boys name in some families.

In America I could see the name anael going very bad.

The only person named Torah that I've ever heard of was the Olympic gold medalist Torah Bright. Super weird name that you should not give to your kid, but hey, maybe Ms. Bright was number one because of her name was kinda awesome? Very Happy

Interesting about her from Wikipedia;
Her parents named her "Torah" after her sister Rowena learned from her Jewish piano teacher that the name referred to the Jewish name for the first five books of the Tanakh and meant "bearer of a great spiritual message" and suggested the name for her new sister.
