Just wondering how popular it is in the Jewish community to own a boat, since someone I know just purchased one.....
If you do which type do you have.

No, but I'd love a kayak! (No motorboat aspirations for me)

I don't but I have several uncle's that have boats. My grandfather always had a boat when I was growing up and we used to spend tons of time on it. My mother's friend owns a boat and my parents are looking to buy a pontoon now so the family has one we can use whenever we wants once we enjoy them.

Reminds me of a joke.
A man put up a sign that read “Boat for Sale”
His friend tells him “oh, I never knew you own a boat”
He replied “I don’t. I own a house and a car and boat are now for sale”.
On this note, I also own a boat. (A bike and a shed)

No, but my aunt (not frum) and her husband (not Jewish) own a small yacht and a few jet skis.

We have gone for rides on chol hamoed, and some of my newlywed siblings and I have even been treated to overnight stays on the boat (in the dock, not on the open water!).

My dh dreams of one but you have to use it quite often to justify the cost otherwise it pays to rent.

From my understanding if you Finance and own a boat partnered with other people it it shouldn’t cost more then a couple hundred a month including all of the fees.

Some people in my community do. But our town is right on the water. My son's camp counselor even has a jet ski. My husband has gone and learned the daf with his friend on the boat.

It's a huge hassle and expense. We are glad to have friends with them ;-) not interested in one of our own.

Oy, I really don’t want to derail this thread... When English isn’t you first language it’s hard to pronounce the “th”. Ok can we go back to boating now?

I don't. I'd love to but it's a headache, and I don't mean financially.

This question seems very geographic to me. If you live by water, or spend all summer by water, maybe. If not, I can't see why you would. Unless- I know people who own kayaks they keep in their garage. Whenever they can, they vacation somewhere near a dock that lets them put them in the water. Are you counting kayaks?

Many boys in Boro Park etc. are taught English as a second language, and don't use it in their social life or studies. So they retain a yiddish accent in their English, far more than girls.

Exactly. DS asked me today why we don't have a boat (my MIL was heading out to drive hers on the Hudson.). Ummm, because we live in the middle of the mountains, and we don't even own a home yet???

In the end, I just told him that when he grows up, he can buy himself a boat if he wants.

thanks for explaining. had a feeling that's what it was. was just wondering since she said men and didn't say chassidish men.

back to topic. my dh wanted to buy one. he wanted me to take the kids boating during the summer and I'm really not as in to as he is. He couldn't justify the cost if it would just be him taking them so we didn't end up buying it.

There’s an old joke that the two best days for a boat owner are the day he buys it and the day he sells it. Meaning is that the purchase is usually regretted.
