Where I grew up in London, there are a bunch of canal boats on the river there. My parents had a frum friend who lived in one. Retirement dreams!!! (although probably not that comfortable long term...) They are actually a pretty affordable housing option in London, I think.

Lol

Affordable and London do not belong in the same sentence.

Affordable for London. I can see that. Boat without house, sure. House and boat, oy.

Don't you have to pay for river parking?

Interestin you wrote this sequoia. I just finished watching a short series called " living mortgage free with sara beeny" all about people in britain trying different ways to live without having a mortgage to pay and one major way was buying a small boat and living on it. Mooring fees or even "parking" your boat license (forgot what it was called) was way cheaper than any rent or mortgage payments in london.

Define "boat". I wouldn't expect many people to own yachts. Inflatable kayaks, otoh...

My upstairs neighbors (not Jewish) had a boat. Honestly, having to see all the work that went just into getting the boat trailer parked and re-attaching it to the car, I wouldn't want one unless it was attached to the dock. Even then, I imagine so much maintenance goes into it, I'd just find it a headache.

I enjoy boating, but not enough to invest much more than the actual time I spend on the boat.

Yes - either no boat or a big one. My husband whose grandfather was an admiral and who knows a lot about boats (I think he can even use a boat) agrees. don't go for the trailer types

It is £1250 per year for a non permanent mooring (it means you have to move every two weeks) and lots more for a permanent one. (£20000 a year? Wouldn't even a London flat be cheaper then that?)

But yes it can definitely be a cheaper housing option for Londoners.

As a kid I always gazed at those narrow boats in awe, wondering what it was like to live in one.

We own one. Not sure what it is or how big. Maybe 26’? DH uses it for fishing and I like to go out to just be on the water. It’s big enough to sleep on but no washroom or kitchen.

Just like everything in our very very OOT world, it’s not common, not popular and nobody cares Smile

Grew up with one. Kept Docked at the marina During the season, covered in backyard or driveway off season. There were plenty of other frum people who had one too. It’s expensive but if you can afford it, it’s great!

I think that's more in the realm of "personal flotation device."

Safety wise, better no boat than a small boat too.

I live right by the Marina
My building is called Marina Towers
I see the yachts from my balcony
I see the men cleaning and polishing all day, everyday
I hate to clean
No thank you
Too much up keep

They the happiest day is the day you buy a boat
The second happiest the day you sell your boat

Not for me
