I am trying to find a specialist who treats binge eating disorder in the metro NY area. Preferably someone who can do zoom sessions. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

As someone who suffered a lot from binge eating and horribly disordered eating I might suggest looking into these two things (which might not help you but helped me)

1. make sure you don't have a blood sugar issue which causes the sensations of desperate endless hunger for carbs when you eat too much carb/sugar (insulin issues) - for instance, learning that I can be hypoglycemic led to me to understand how I could eat an entire box of cookies in one sitting without being able to stop. Now I balance sugar/carbs with fats and proteins and I can FEEL my body evening out (and I can tell when my body is being flooded with insulin and is interpreting it as a desperate urge for carbs). This means getting bloodwork and finding a nutritionist who can advise you on insulin imbalances.

2. Intuitive eating saved my life and sanity. I found the books hard to read but took Rena Reiser's phone/online course (google it, she's a great interpreter of the method) and used the nutritionist Dena Cohen (eatwellsoon.com). SAVED MY LIFE.

sending you loads and loads and LOADS of hugs!!! I know it feels like you are trapped and will never live life any differently but I'm telling you it's possible! It may take a while but know that one day - a year from now, two years - you may be able to look back at today and say, whoa, that was a hellish time in my life, I'm so glad I'm not there anymore because I am FREE of serving food... food now serves ME.

sending so much love and support to you! You can do this! Hashem is holding your hand as you take this journey and YOU ARE NOT ALONE. So many others have gone on this route before you and are taking this journey too. You are human and you are wonderful and imyH you will find your way out of this way of living to a much freer, happier life!!!

I binged for 15 years. I worked with many coaches and read many books. I can tell you a few things right now:

Binging is a direct result of dieting.
If you are dieting or restricting (in any way- types of food, food groups, calories, over exercising, etc) you WILL binge eventually.

I have finally stopped binging but only because I let myself eat whatever I wanted for 8 years now. Haven’t lost or gained a lb but at least I’m not binging anymore. There was no worse feeling in the world.

The ONLY book worth reading is Kathryn Hansen’s “brain over binge” get both books and definitely sign up for her online course. It’s life changing. It’s not very expenosve . Maybe like $100?
Don’t bother with intuitive eating. Take it out from library and read once.

I also liked geneen Roth books but mostly because I felt so validated and understood.

Me again- dina Cohen (eat well soon) in Lakewood is one of the only nutritionists I know who dealt with binging properly. Danyela schupak in Lawrence is good too.
Don’t go near any nutritionist who gives you a strict diet. You will just binge after a week. And it will reinforce the bad habits.
However both those nutritionists are a fortune. Like $50-$100 a session!!!!!!!!

Get Kathryn Hansen books. You’ll thank me later

Also btw about Kathryn Hansen-
She has free podcasts which basically tell you her whole approach for free.
However I still liked the course and learned a lot from that too. Do both but start with free podcasts for sure

My eating disorder was also based on a sugar reaction. My reaction to insulin was that it made me need to eat like I was dying. Now that my blood sugar is stable, I don’t binge.

I have also lost 110 pounds. I do this e wry single day of my life, happily.

You’re welcome to pm. I send you the PDF that explains it.

NJ. Google him. Might do zoom. I don't have personal experience with him, though.

Are you in Lakewood? Dina Cohen is amazing but I'm not sure if she has availability. Otherwise, Kate Fortunado at Begin Within in Red Bank is phenomenal.

Kate is a nutritionist. I think there are also therapists in the same practice.
Dina Cohen should also be able to refer you to a therapist if she thinks it's necessary.
