If he stands on a stool and leans over the toilet to hold onto the back, he’ll be perfectly positioned.
IMO, teach him to aim with an open hand, not grasping. In a few years DH can let him know that it’s better not to touch, but still be neat.
My issue is the lack of aim at night when they’re too Tired to.

I taught my boys standing up right from the start. That was the advice I got at the time. And it was so easy and really not messy. Until they were old enough to realize how much fun it could be!

I taught them to push it down with some fingers to aim in the bowl. Bathroom still stinks but I guess less than it would have if they peed all over the walls

Lol, which is why my boys got trained in going sitting down :-D
Someone must have shown them eventually how to go standing up, guessing it was my husband, but I know they initially were taught but an Ima who only knew how to deal with the sitting down method
