Dd was just diagnosed with scoliosis. Can anyone recommend a specialist, place they got a brace from, or anything else that you have had a positive experience with? Would love to use someone that comes recommended and don’t know anyone dealing with this irl. Thank you!

There was an article in the AMI magazine about a dr in Monroe that is very experienced and avoids surgery.
It stands out in my mind from a while ago.
Maybe contact their office for the info.

I went to Steven Burke at hospital for special surgery. Are you sure she needs a brace? What degree is her curvature?

Do you know if he takes insurance?

Yes, took her to one doctor and seems she had a 50 degree curvature. Don’t like the sounds of the place he recommended to go for a brace. Not sure if I should go for a complete second opinion or just look for someplace else to go for brace. Thanks for the recommendations so far.

I went to dr Widman from HSS hospital of special surgery. This hospital only handles orthopedic so they are experts. 10 years later my nephew was treated by him as well. He is excellent.

I just needed a brace (my curve was 32) but my nephew had brace and surgery (started with a 35 but had a large growth spurt and high the brace couldn’t contain and it zipped up to 47) Based on my understanding a curve of 50 would likely need surgery and there probably will not be any bracing for that. In my opinion it’s much better to do the surgery and just get over it then try these alternative things that may or may not work. Most of the alternative treatments for this condition is a lot more effective in people with lesser curves. 50 is considered to be moderate to severe.Untreated scoliosis can lead to a lot of problems later. Pregnancy as well can really put a strain on the back so you want to addressed properly.

I would definitely go for a second opinion. Like previous poster said 50 sounds too high for a brace but whichever method you end up doing its not a simple thing for your child. I was in a brace for 2 months and it was extremely difficult physically and emotionally. So before you go ahead with it I would want to know im doing the right thing for my child and q second opinion would go a long away in calming my fears.

You should go to Columbia Presbyterian they have an amazing team with top doctors. I met with Tovia Hauer from the Ami article and I wasn't impressed, He claims you need orthodics in shoes and a brace to fix the curve which isn't necessarily true - you don't necisserily need the shoe orthodics. he is also not a scoliosis doctor he just has a license to make braces. You should go to a specialist that really knows the field. We tried Maimonides but weren't happy with the team there. My daughter has been braced for a long time now and I did a lot of research on where to take her and who has the correct method. Scoliosis can't be corrected but you can prevent the curve from getting worse. Don't trust anyone that says that the curve can be corrected it isn't true. Hatzlochah.

also tovia hauer doesn't take insurance and charges at least $3,000. It is insane. If you have insurance you should go to a good doctor not someone who claims to be able to cure scoliosis.

two months is short! I wore it for almost 2 years and that was considered short because most people wear it for 4 years or more. You need to wear it until you almost stop growing and in my case luckily it was caught during my last growth spurt. So yeah I would not want to go through that if there isn’t a strong chance of success

agreed. When you wear a brace it stops the curve from worsening And improves it a bit but when you stop wearing it it reverts back to The original diagnosed curve usually. which is why they often don’t brace curves over 40 because to be left with a 40+ degree Curve is Not considered a good outcome because at that point you are like a tower of blocks that’s about to tip - the curve gets worse and worse even once you stop growing until it gets to a point where it deteriorated rapidly. Whereas a 35 degree curve is unlikely To worsen once you stop growing.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I wore it for 2 months and then we went for second opinoon and it was determined I dont need one.

I second, third and fourth Dr Widman. He treated all my girls. He works with someone in the hospital for bracing.

I recently took my baby to him. He's a very pleasant person and the office was also efficient. He thinks my baby doesn't need any treatment right now, just to be watched every six months for now. Hopefully, he's right.
