Judy, Judith, Yehudis - all perfectly respectable Jewish names.

And if she starts to criticize people, you can call her "Judge Judy"! LOL

Nice name but I might go with Judith on the birth certificate and use Judy as the nickname. There might be situations as an adult when a woman wants to have a more "serious" professional name.

It’s not really a name I picture on a baby but I guess it could be cute.

It's my mother's name. She's in her 60's and it was a common name in her generation. I think it would be considered old-fashioned at the moment.

I know a few women my age with that name and for them it's nice, but it's too old-fashioned to give a baby that name today.

Old fashioned names, especially Biblical ones, are trendy now.

I think it's a little old fashioned but also very nice. I'd do it if you like the name.

For those who think the name Judy is too old fashioned, you should see the roster of names in the (upper middle class, not specifically religious) elementary public school I work in...Sadie, Millie, Nora, Hannah, Bea, Silas, Jehiel, Abram are just a few of the recent ones that have been pretty popular. Judith or a Judy would fit right in, lol.

JK, but you could probably call her Yehudis until she grows into a Judy

As posted retro names are experiencing a resurgence of popularity in both frum and secular world.

Also as this thread illustrates a name that is innocuous like Judy has people who like and don't like it so it's truly a matter of personal taste.

I think asking opinions for names is useful only in terms of finding out that a name might have secondary meanings one might not be familiar with that would give pause. For example, there was a thread asking about the name Trani and the first thing that came to my mind was that it is generally used as a shorthand description for a transvestite so I would never name a child anything that could be shortened or in any way be "Trani" or sound like it. And I would have been grateful if I were alerted to that if I weren't aware of secondary meanings.

But a name like Judy - nothing wrong with having an old fashioned name - again within reason as I don't think a name like Bertha is ever going to be a good choice.
