When was each test performed relative to each other?

If they are taken the same day. It would depend on if I were symptomatic or not.

Hard to say. It can be one false positive and that your negative. Or the opposite, and that you are actually positive. Those tests are quite new and not that accurate.

What does your doctor say? Do you have any symptoms?

In all seriousness, why's the positive likely to be more accurate than the negative?

I think for these various tests, the likelihood of a false positive is different than the likelihood of a false negative.
Also, the risks of assuming someone is negative when they are actually positive are generally viewed as higher than assuming someone is positive when they are actually negative.
Probably getting another test and talking to the local DOH are in order.

It's really tricky then. Are you having symptoms? Would you go to a Dr to recheck? Maybe ask a Rav what to do.

I thought a positive test means that some COVID-19 genetic materlal was found. A false negative can mean it was missed. There is a much higher chance of getting a false negative than a false positive. I would go with the positive. Does anyone know if this is correct?

That’s generally right. The false negative could be that they did a kind of crappy job of swabbing, that they got most of the material the first time they swabbed you (if the negative was the second test), that you had blown your nose recently, etc etc. A false positive usually is via contamination (of either the sample or something downstream in the test like reagents). All of the tests that I’ve seen currently marketed have much higher rates of false negatives than false positives, but by all means look up the specifics for the exact test they gave you. You should also reach out to your doctor or DOH for advice. In the meantime, assume your positive and isolate accordingly.

How long did you wait between tests? Was it several days apart or same day? If same day, I would rinse nostrils and test again. Possibly some old virus cells.
