Is it crazy to cook a small cholent on the plata ?
Putting it on right before candlelighting?

My plata wouldn't cook it through/cook it evenly. I would if I had to, with cholent cooked through, on a double boiler.

I do it often and know others that do, but I wouldn't put it on right before candle lighting. I would do it much earlier.

I put it on the plata there is one spot that will get boiling hot. I do it a little bit before candle lighting like 20 min before.

I use a plata, but I always cook the tcholent beforehand on the stovetop...

My husband puts it on right before sunset. I think it needs to be either a third or half cooked before shabbos, or completely raw. Ask your Rabbi though!

Yes that's important...according to halacha it has to be at least 1/3 cooked (maachal ben drosai) before shabbbos.
I always put my cholent on the hot plate but cook it for a while before.
