Dh is in aveilus. We both still have at least one parent that would be very sad if they couldn't have a family get together so we are having a 'party' and most if not all siblings will be there. It's really a family get together with simple food since dhs family doesn't give gifts or play music.
My family is small so our party is just a regular dinner with everyone which dhs was told is fine all year. My parents give gifts and they usually give something small to the adults but they'll just skip giving dh a gift this year.

In the first 30 days I was told I couldn't go to any parties. But now I have a friend making a bat mitzvah where she is really only having a few close friends and family. I was told not only can go but that I should go. I was actually quite surprised but I was so happy that I asked.I live in Israel without any family so friends here are really like family.
