If there was no reward or punishment, how do you think people would act?

This is a great question. I’m not sure humans would act any different than animals if there’s no din vecheshbon at all. Also I’m not sure anyone would survive. What would keep people from killing each others? Would be chaotic. Like Noach’s times.

Pirkei Avos says it: without fear of government regulations, people would eat each other alive.
Related is Yechezkel 18, yesterday's Nach Yomi. I just listened to Mrs. Shira Hochheimer on reward and punishment in the time of neviim acharonim.

Sometimes animals act nicer than humans. A lot of animals live socially in flocks/prides. Generally they kill each other because they need to eat, which IMO is a much better reason than why humans usually kill each other. In any case, animals didn't do the Holocaust.

Ok, but hashkafic aspects aside, there are natural built in consequences to our actions, both positive and negative.

Anyone with a little foresight learns that their thoughts, speech and actions will bring about certain outcomes.
