I'm wondering what the average 1.5 year old can say? Basically looking to settle a debate between dh and I whether our 1.5 year old speech is normal or above average.
1. What words or sentences has your 1.5 year old said?
2. How clear is the pronunciation?
3. What number child in the family (I think this makes a big difference in their speech).
Thanks.

Do you also think it matters if they are kept home vs daycare?

She's an only child right now.
Has about 30 words total, about a dozen are used in a daily basis. Occasionally but rarely puts two together. When she's in a good mood uses words a lot, cranky uses none.

My DS said avg 20 words at 20 months got some speech therapy at age 3 and speaks 3 languages now. My dd spoke in full sentences at 15 months, was at a 3 year old level. I know some 1.5 year olds who don’t say a word and a few who say brilliant things don’t know avg but what I know for sure is the more u read to your kids starting when they’re babies -the more well spoken they are no matter how smart one is

Hey hey! EI speech therapist here!
An 18 month old should have around 15 words. No sentences yet, but if they already have then great!
She/he should be 50% intelligible to the primary caretaker, less so to everyone else.
Birth order doesn’t seem to have a major role, however people do say that their second child spoke earlier than their first child. Gender makes a bigger difference than birth order.
Any questions?

Lol love the shein
Makes sense my ds was a second child but a boy. I find girls talk much more earlier. Playgroup didn’t make a difference but I was building up their language at home so it wld benefit those who are not into educating at home

My older one probably had 30-40 words at 18 months. By 20 months, he was saying 6-word sentences. My younger one followed a similar pattern.

My 15 month old has been speaking since 10 months old. Now he says around 40 words and loves to copy DH and I and tries to say whatever we say. A lot of his words are clear but not everything- we know what he is saying. Example- Buh is book. Or water is wawa.
He’s our first.

Wow. Fascinating.
Totally different range here and it all seems normal.
Thanks everyone for your input.
To be honest, she's not even 18 months yet. She's 4th kh and just started playgroup this week.
She probably says 30-40 words (or more). More than 50% intelligible. And some sentences like: 'I want dis' or 'I wana come' (copying older siblings, but she understands the meaning).
I guess my husband was right...
Edited to change amount of words after I counted with dh.

That she's above average. But to me she was regular.
I was comparing her to the daughter before her. Older dd's speech was much clearer and more words but I guess she was extremely above average kh.

Now I'm feeling really anxious about mine. She's 18mo and she doesn't talk. No words. I opened this thread thinking it would be someone posting the same thing, and now I'm feeling like she's way behind. She's number 3 if that makes any difference.

No words whatsoever? Even mama, dada, baba etc?
If so I would get it checked out. Maybe a hearing problem?
Like a speech therapist above said 15 words.
I know in Israel at child's 18 month check up they expect 10 words. So if your child says 10 words maybe wait a bit longer.
Hatzlacha.
