Was probably from last week, bought it today. Cake was stale tasting and waste of money. Should I call the grocery tomorrow? Go in? Forget the $30? I think it was a mistake they had an old cake, their stuff is usually good

go back with cake, ask for manager
rememebr to be soft, nice, and keep tone low.
show repsect to the person, expect him to correct problem. he will.
(refund or replacement, your choice)
I was disappointed.... I would like a refund/ another cake etc.

Can’t hurt to call and ask. They don’t need the cake back.

Why are you asking what to do if you already threw it out?
I'd have brought it back and returned it. Why not? A sell-by date of 11/15 means it should not have been stale.
I don't think you can asks for a refund with no cake to return. But I would mention it to the manager of the bakery department and if they have good customer service they will possibly offer you a replacement. Especially if you mention it in a discreet, "I just thought you should be aware," sort of way and not, "you ripped me off and sold me a sheet of styrofoam" way.

When I had the same thing I called and they said to bring it back so they can see. As soon as they saw the cake they agreed with me, apologized and said to pick anything comparable.
I had previously had another situation where it was after closing so I threw out the item and called the store the next day and the manager gave me a refund but said it's really not right to expect them to refund without showing them what the problem was both so they know you're telling the truth and so they can hopefully figure out what's wrong and fix it.
