We're headed towards a 6-week summer vacation in Australia. My DD will not have day care in that time and is the kind of kid who needs a lot to be happening to keep her entertained.

Except play-dough, sand and water play, drawing and painting, what inexpensive activities can you suggest to keep her busy throughout the long days ahead? We'll obviously go out whenever the weather permits, but it'll likely be too hot most of the time.

At that age my kids were most engaged by dumping and filling. A shopping cart or a doll carriage that they could fill up, walk around with, dump out, and refill for the next round were often our best toys.

A cheap menorah and a box of candles might also be a great you for this time of year. My boys always loved playing lighting the menorah and it satisfied that filling and dumping erge very nicely.
