I've seen people post asking about schools in BK and many people say the parent body is "Flatbushy". What does that mean?

It makes me think “unfriendly”, “clique-y”, “overly fancy”.

Less open to those who are out of the box or those making out of the box choices

More focused on clothing and presentation and external appearance

More focused on fitting in, being mainstream and normal, toeing the line, being "with it"

Less interested in authenticity

More interested in fitting in with the right crowd

Interesting.
I never took it so derogatorily-I just hear that as trendy

I feel like I know a bunch of trendy women who aren't Flatbushy where I live now. Just my experience.

It means Boro Park-y 2.0

Or Boro Park-y NextGen

Your pick.

Such a great question for an ima named bumpkin,

If going by that thread it means yeshivish wannabes but the values are all wrong.

It means you’d give up your last penny/life not to be perceived as you can’t afford something.

To me growing up in Boro Park it meant not yeshivish, money and trendy as compared to some other neighborhoods in Brooklyn. However, it might be more yeshivish and less trendy as compared to other neighborhoods in other places. The only way to understand the term is in comparison to other neighborhoods.

Agreed. But I think it says more about her and her BP upbringing than it does about the communities she felt the need to put down.

I grew up in both Boro Park and Kensington and very happily enjoy being nebby Smile

Which part wasn't nice? The way I described Boro Park, Flatbush, Kensington or Bensonhurst?

As I said, if you can not only call 2 entire communities of frum Jews "nebby," but then still have to ask what you said that wasn't nice, I think that says a lot more about you and your BP "chinuch" than it does about the "nebs" in Kensington and Bensonhurst (and I've never lived in either of them).

I still don't understand. As I said I grew up in Kensington. I'm very happy to be nebby. Nothing wrong with it.

Yes- but what about the rest of us “ nebbies” living in the above mentioned places that feel a bit ugh now?

My profuse apologies. Do you have a better way to describe it?
