Question says it all
Can I serve pumpkin pie as a side dish on shabbos?
If not, why not, when I have been served butternut squash pie and sweet potato pie as side dishes?
TIA!

We make it savoury. Eat with main. Or dessert. Whatever really.

It's whatever you want it to be. I'm having my mother over for Shabbos and I will be serving sweet potato pie as a side with no qualms whatsoever. (And a helping of arsenic, as per my DH)

I would use it as a second side.
Sort of like apple pie

I don't like or make sweet side dishes, and normally pass them on if I'm offered them as a guest. If you like it, serve it when you want. Personally I would only use it for dessert.

I've made pumpkin pies to serve as part of dinner, but I make them so much less sweet. A traditional pumpkin pie is so sweet it would be weird as a side dish.

It’s like a sweet kugel. From my limited experience it’s really not that sweet.
Pumpkin is a type of squash so it’s really normal to serve it as a side .
Did you get a free pumpkin pie today?

I would never think to do that but I guess it's like people serving apple cobbler as a side dish? To me that was always a dessert served with a nice swoop of whip topping on top.

I serve it as a side. Nobody's ever complained.

I've only seen it served as a kugel equivalent

I think serving apple crisp or cherry kugel as a side is weird too. Not a fan of sweet side dishes.
The pumpkin pie ive had has been very sweet.

I guess if you normally serve butternut squash pie and apple crisp as a side dish then it's fine.
For the rest of us it's dessert.

Maybe it’s cultural? I only serve pumpkin pie as dessert (with lots of whipped cream!!) and I have only ever seen it served as dessert. Think about your local bakery. Its with the rest of the pies, not in the deli counter with the side dishes.

It depends on the pumpkin pie.
Traditional American Thanksgiving pumpkin pie is basically pumpkin flavored custard. It's really a dessert thing.
My pumpkin pie recipe is a side dish. It still has some sweetness too it but it's more of an enhancement to the natural sweetness of the roasted squash (yes, pumpkin is a type of winter squash).

Never heard of it as a side. It’s a dessert to me.

Thanks so much everyone. Seems like opinion is divided on this
I will use it as a side, and I look forward to seeing the reactions of my shabbos guests lol!

I make a delicious coconut pumpkin pie for Succos every year, and always serve it as a side.

I don’t make sweet kugels but do whatever you want, it’s your house!
