My ds (10) gobbles down his food. He barely chews it. By the shabbos meal, by the time everyone finishes one slice of challa, he already finished 3. He is gaining weight.

How do I teach him to chew his food slowly and properly?

Same issue but with my husband lol. He’s not gaining weight and doesn’t eat huge amounts but he eats abnormally fast. And then he complains that he gets stomach pain. He puts food in his mouth and then chews once to make room for more and repeats several times before swallowing the whole humongous bite of mostly unchewed food. It drives me nuts but he won’t stop. Ironically my mother in law will openly criticize people’s eating habits at the table in front of a whole table full of people but her own son can do no wrong and he never gets a comment even when he eats like a machine and belches loudly at the table. Brother in law as well licks his fingers and then puts them back into the bowl of chocolates...

Not really. I realized it in the past year or 2.

Chewing food well Is so important for good digestion!
I’m an SLP but not a feeding specialist. I e may wonder if he even knows how to chew properly. He may also have weak oral muscle tone. Both of these things can be fixed.

So last night I actually gave him a whole biology lesson. I explained the whole digestive system, and how important it is to chew the food properly.

I guess I'll just have to constantly remind him.

You can get him into speech therapy. Find a slp who does this.
