An iPod touch has virtually all the same functionality as an iPhone, without a call feature, since it isn’t a phone. It has a web browser and it has the capability to download any apps on the AppStore. Of course, as with iPhones, there are filtering options.

It can do pretty much everything an iPhone can except for making calls and sending text messages. Which is why it’s probably a better bargain to buy an older model iPhone (7 or 8) and just disabling the WiFi and cellular data.

He can if they have iMessage or use a messaging app (but WhatsApp doesn’t work on iPods).

There is messaging, it has iMessage to iMessage capability, that’s how the kids message each other usually or have class chats, or you can download WhatsApp..
my son (12) is also asking for one. If I get it I will disable safari, he will not be able to download apps without me authorizing it either..
