I DO have a child named Chaya, and I don’t mind this thread at all.

I wonder how your DD would feel if her friend tells her she’d never give the name Chaya cuz it reminds her of wild animals. To me it’s lacking basic tact and middos. I’d think this is basic.🤷‍♀️

Oh I love fun threads and there are plenty funny posts here that don’t mention names that people actually have. Btw, I’m not always sensitive enough either.

Itchie is Yitzchok. An acceptable name with a terrible nickname

My relative's son is named yitzchok but sometimes Itchie as a pet nickname (at home, closer family, not official). He also gained another nickname "Ichabod" as it is written in Dr Seuss's ABC book, "Ichabod is itchy, so am I" LOL

Not that any other first name would help with the last name. But seriously, Shome?? (Israel, so no idea if the parents know English)

This takes the cake

I had a friend who had a very hard life and passed away young, I wouldn't give that name because I associate it with bad mazel even though it is a typical name.
I also would only give an uncommon name together with a common one that my child should be able to choose to be called by whichever they like better.

Hey Bubby, what happens if your children decide to give that name to your granddaughter, would your call her Pishy?

Or would you say, Hey I'm not your Bubby!

For me, it's Yiddish names. Sorry if that offends anyone.

My sister has a Yiddish name and hates it. She's furious that my parents didn't give her the Hebrew equivalent (which, it turns out, the person whom she was named after was actually called).

I suppose Yiddish triggers me. I'm not sure why.

I always thought Chaya is a beautiful name.
It brings up images of life, not animals.
Not that I mind animals.

I have to comment on the name Chaya. It's one of my names, although I'm not called by that. when I was going thru IF and went to a certain holy rebbe z'l for a bracha, he lit up when he saw that my name is also Chaya and said "Chaya is a yoledes" and proceeded to show my husband the source in gemara. BH I was bentched to be a yoledes a few times over so you never know...

The name Yenta is in my family with a few relatives named after her and they are the most successful wonderful beautiful women. Actually every other Yenty I know is too. It actually has a beautiful meaning but became derogatory after "Fiddler on the Roof".

As a teen I once pestered my mother (in a lighthearted joking around way) about awful baby names, and kept asking, "What would you do if I named my baby ____?" And she kept firing back appropriate, normal-sounding nicknames. It was fun. The only one I remember now was, "What if I named my baby Bikini?" And she matter-of-factly said, "I'll call her Becky." LOL

In real life baby naming scenarios, I had a few preferences that ultimately went out the window when it came time for actually choosing a name. I was okay with ches names, even in America, but I've always been self-conscious about taf/saf mixups, so I was clear with my husband that I wanted to avoid names with a saf, like Netanel/Nesanel for example.

Then came my daughter Basya! Smile She's named after my grandmother, and her name could not be more perfect. I wouldn't have believed if if you told me so a few years ago, but it became my favorite girl's name in the whole world.

I'm a believer in baby-naming Ruach HaKodesh!

Any Israelis can confirm?
I’ve heard Atara should not be given as a name in Israel because it’s slang for something inappropriate.
But in the US it’s fine.

It's the modernized Hebrew version for the yiddish name Kreindel. Both mean a "crown".
